The much anticipated World Health Organisation @wh

The much anticipated World Health Organisation @who status report on Ear and Hearing Care (EHC) for the African region has been formally launched. 👏Unsurprisingly, the results are shocking. 😰 The report’s key findings indicate that our biggest challenges are:
❌ A lack of strategic leadership and policies for EHC
❌ Hearing care programs not integrated into other systems and programs, even though such integrations would facilitate implementation and sustainability
❌ Low awareness regarding EHC
❌ Public misconceptions of hearing loss
❌ Stigma associated with treatment of ear diseases and hearing rehabilitation
❌ EHC services limited to urban areas
Acute shortage in EHC workforce
❌ Limited availability of EHC services at primary and secondary levels of care
❌ A lack of financing for EHC resulting in high costs for services
❌ A lack of evidence-based data on the burden of ear disease and hearing loss

We take great pride in showing our donors how their funds are being used at our outreach projects. 🧡 Today was no exception as we introduced three members of the @spirit_foundation_sa team to our Grassy Park hearing aid clinic and arranged for them to observe a hearing aid fitting which had been made possible by their financial contributions. Thank you Spirit Foundation for your commitment to our community initiatives as well as @hear.com.sa for the hearing aid which you donated to us.🦻 Our patient was so thrilled to be able to hear again and was most excited about going home to listen to her granddaughter’s voice. 💞 A special shout out goes to @jemappelle_safoora who has been such an integral part of our success and will be taking a few months of maternity leave. We will miss you Safoora but wish you all the best for the last stretch and another exciting chapter ahead. 💝

New equipment day at @hearinafrica Tokai! 🤓 Super chuffed with our new @interacoustics_us diagnostic audiometer which allows us to now do the Audible Contrast Threshold test as well as our usual pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, real ear measurements and real ear to coupler difference tests. 👩‍🔬 Thank you Interacoustics South Africa for pulling out all the stops to get our new baby here so quickly and to ensure that calibration and training took place on the same day. 👌 This is hearing science at its best! 🎧

We are delighted to introduce Simone Delo, the new

We are delighted to introduce Simone Delo, the newest member of the @hearinafrica team! 🤗 Simone was born and bred in Cape Town and has a BSc (Hons) in Audiology from the @university_of_cape_town . She completed her community service at Kimberly Hospital in 2018 and subsequently entered private practice where she focused on refining her skills in adult diagnostic hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings/repairs/troubleshooting and counselling individuals and their families about how to adapt to life with hearing loss. She also has a special interest in the assessment and rehabilitation of balance and vestibular disorders. Simone is a clinical educator at UCT’s Faculty of Health Science as well as a clinical supervisor and volunteer for @shawco_uct - the largest student-led NPO in Africa. Welcome to the family, Simone, we are thrilled to have you onboard! 🦋
